Hanging
Your aims:
- Restore (bring back) good enough breathing.
- Try to get medical help
Your actions:
- Remove the rope (or other item) from the around the person’s neck. If the person is still hanging, you will need to support the body whilst you do this (Be aware that the body will be heavy!).
- Lay the casualty on the ground. Assess
- D R A B. If the casualty is not breathing, begin CPR. If the casualty is breathing, place him or her into the recovery position as for a person with a suspected spinal injury (see Unit 18).
- Call for medical help.
If the person was trying to hang him or herself (i.e. it was not an accident), you must tell the police. You must also keep the rope (or other item) to give to the police.

Precaution to observe around children.
Avoid taking medicine in the presence of small children. Safeguard
with special precautions, all drugs that are colored, flavoured or
coated with sugar (including aspirin flavored chewing gum). Warn small
children not to eat or drink medicines or anything else they may find
without your permission. Insist upon this rule as soon as they are
old enough to begin exploring the home environment.
Teach children about the danger of drugs and poisonous chemicals.
Do not allow them to inhale plastic glues or resins for a prolonged
period of time wile building plastic models. Provide teenagers with
information regarding the danger of drinking industrial alcohols,
overdoses of alcohol, and experimentation with drugs.
Disposal
Take an inventory of drugs and chemicals in the home. Discard old drugs periodically, particularly those left over from treatment of special illnesses. Flush the drugs down the drain. Rinse containers and throw them away.
Preparation for emergencies
Learn what to do in case of overdose of medication or accidental poisoning. Keep first aid supplies on hand and available at all times. Also keep handy the telephone numbers of your doctor, hospital, and poison control centre and the police and fire departments.
